The History of Sculpted Cable
When Sybil and David Yurman first met in 1969, their creative paths were distinct: Sybil was a painter and ceramicist, while David was a sculptor with a passion for direct welding. Over time, their relationship deepened personally and artistically, evolving into a lifelong collaboration. Together, they transformed their lives and, ultimately, their company into “one long art project,” drawing inspiration from architecture, nature, and much more.

Sculpted Cable
Behind the Collection
By 1970, David was already experimenting with jewelry. A natural draftsman, David spent much of his life dreaming through his drawings. He was especially drawn to the beauty of the line in various forms: helical strands of DNA, hanging vines, twisting columns, nautical ropes, and suspension cables. Like a recurring dream, this form constantly appeared in his sketches and direct-weld sculpting, an innovative technique that would allow David to realize his full artistic capabilities, setting the groundwork for beloved Cable jewelry.

The story behind the classic David Yurman Cable bracelet began in the late 1970s in Tribeca, New York City. In an epic overture of love, David masterfully tamed 50 feet of wire into the first Cable bracelet he made for Sybil—the height of a 5-story building, gracefully wrapped around her wrist. Sybil wasn’t the only woman who loved the iconic piece. When stopped by a curious admirer on the street, Sybil generously surrendered the cuff, prophetically telling David: “You’ll make more.” This serendipitous moment manifested the beginning of a movement that would establish the Cable bracelet as a preeminent icon in American designer jewelry.
We became fascinated with architectural detail that also appeared in jewelry
The First Cable Bracelet
In 1982, the very first Cable bracelet debuted as part of the Renaissance® collection. An instant success, it immediately became the Yurmans’ signature piece. This contemporary, groundbreaking fusion of relaxed American style and traditional craftsmanship brought global acclaim.
For Sybil and David, Cable was not an end in itself: it became the perfect foundation for endless possibilities, a classic form that could evolve into new styles and expressions. Decades later, Cable is used in beautiful and innovative ways throughout every David Yurman collection, appearing as an accent, a setting, a clasp, or a subtle signature.
A lot of what we did was informed by architecture
The Making of Sculpted Cable
Sybil and David Yurman’s son, Evan, President and Chief Creative Officer of the company, evolved Cable, the beloved form, with his own unique point of view, drawing inspiration from his love of architecture and bas-relief sculpture. Evan imagined Cable’s classic, undulating twists with his singular vision, creating new shapes and proportions—each piece reflecting the meticulous skill, artistic sensibility, and exceptional craftsmanship that makes David Yuman jewelry so special. A modern evolution of David Yurman’s signature Cable, the Sculpted Cable collection emerged as a new house icon.
Sculpted Cable embodies the elegant proportions of the S-curve—lines of beauty in their purest form. Often considered the most beautiful shape in the world, the S-curve has been used for centuries in art and design. A celebration of strength and an ode to beauty in all forms, each Sculpted Cable piece is a wearable work of art—inspired by architecture, bas-relief sculpture, nature, and the DNA of David Yurman Cable jewelry.

Sculpted Cable’s Design Language
A balance of beauty and strength defines the Sculpted Cable collection. Elegant contours highlight the sensuality of the body, and intricate fluting references the strong, twisted columns seen in ancient Greek and Roman architecture. Evan Yurman updates the original Cable’s cylindrical pattern, rendering a new perspective that transforms the original helix into a flattened, carved relief.
Masterful Craftsmanship and Exceptional Materials
David Yurman designs are crafted with exceptional materials by our master jewelers and artisans, and the Sculpted Cable collection is no different—artfully realized in precious metals and sparkling, hand-set diamonds.
Striking Necklaces
One of the collection’s most coveted designs, a Sculpted Cable necklace marries the elegance of high-end jewelry with the carefree ease of an everyday design, making it a versatile piece that can be incorporated into everyday style or on special occasions. A matching Sculpted Cable bracelet accentuates the look in bold and narrow dimensions, available with and without diamonds.
Iconic Bracelets
The latest styles of our Sculpted Cable bangle bracelet emerge in sleek proportions and mixed metals. A nod to David’s love for all things equestrian and Sybil’s X series paintings, these stackable bracelets feature the iconic buckle and X motifs adorned with brilliant pavé-set diamonds that catch the light from every angle. Newer styles, such as the Sculpted Cable Chain necklace, merge luxury and effortlessness in 18K gold and sterling silver. Two oval links are individually hand-carved and engineered to lay flat on the body, adding a dramatic, dimensional effect.
Statement Rings
Sensual silhouettes and bold, winding curves define pieces like the Sculpted Cable ring and gold hoop earrings, while a Sculpted Cable micro pinky ring presents a dainty version of mesmerizing, sculptural layers in 18K yellow gold. Vibrant splashes of color make an appearance in open cocktail rings beautifully inlaid with emeralds, tourmalines, citrines, rubellites, tsavorites, turquoise, and black onyx gemstones.
Men’s Tags
A modern jewelry icon for everyone, Sculpted Cable designs are also available in a range of men’s jewelry styles, featuring refined materials such as black titanium, 18K white and rose gold, and cognac diamonds.
