How Is a Ring Supposed to Fit?
Ring sizing is about finding the perfect balance of security and comfort. Before measuring your ring size, it’s best to understand how a ring is supposed to fit. A properly fitted ring feels comfortable and sits securely at the base of the finger once it’s over the knuckle. The ideal ring is neither too loose or too tight and should slide on and off with minimal effort. A ring should be able to move slightly on your finger, but not so much that it spins or slips off easily.

Step 3: Measure Your Finger and Find Your Size
-
Make sure your printout is the correct scale by placing your credit card under the appropriate line.
-
Carefully cut along the outline of the printed ring sizer. Make a small slit on the line on the left end of the sizer.
-
Wrap the sizer around the intended finger with the numbers facing out.
-
Move the sizer to the larger part of the finger and pull tightly. The sizer must fit snugly to produce an accurate size.
-
The number that lines up with the slit represents the ring size for that finger.
Match Your Current Ring to Our Chart
Using the same printable ring sizer, follow these steps to measure your size by comparing a ring from your collection to the circular ring graph.
-
Select a ring you already own that perfectly fits the finger on which you will wear your David Yurman ring.
-
Align your ring with the circle above that most closely matches in size. The inner edge of your ring should align with the outer edge of the circle. This number is the inside circumference of your ring.
-
If your ring appears to be between two sizes, we suggest you choose the larger size.

How to Gift a Ring Without Knowing Their Size
Whether you're buying an engagement ring for a surprise proposal or simply gifting a David Yurman ring to a loved one, here are some tips to help you buy a ring when size is a mystery.
-
Borrow a ring they already wear and take it to your nearest David Yurman store for professional sizing. If you can’t make it to a store, trace the inside of the ring onto a piece of paper. Then compare its circumference to the circle in our ring size guide that most closely matches in size.
-
Enlist family and friends who can discretely help you determine your loved one’s size.
-
Make an estimate through careful yet subtle observations.
If you don’t have exact measurements, use the average ring size as a guide. The average ring size for women in the US is a size 6 while the average men’s ring size is a 9. Flexible designs like our Sculpted Cable Flex band rings maintain their shape once adjusted, making them perfect gift options when size is tricky to determine.

Ring Sizing Tips
-
Always measure the specific hand—and finger—you’ll wear the ring on.
-
If you have a prominent knuckle, measure the knuckle and base of the finger and choose the size in between. For example, if your knuckle is an 8 and the base is a 6, choose size 7.
-
Avoid measuring your finger on overly hot or cold days, or after ingesting alcohol or salt.
-
For the most accurate measurement, size your finger at the end of the day—and measure twice to double-check the accuracy of your results.
-
Wide band rings cover more surface area on your finger, which can create a snugger fit compared to narrower bands. For wider band rings that are larger than 4mm, increase your measurement by ½ to 1 full size.
-
When stacking rings, layer thinner bands on top and wear the widest band on the bottom.
-
If you plan to stack multiple thin band rings, consider how the combined width will feel on your finger. We recommend going up a ½ size for comfort and proper circulation—especially if the stack covers a significant portion of your finger.
-
If you're purchasing a single thin band (2.2mm or less), we recommend staying true to your regular ring size to help prevent spinning. However, if you plan to stack multiple thin bands on the same finger, the combined width may feel tighter. In that case, consider sizing up ½ size for comfort—especially if your stack will sit higher on the finger or cover more surface area.
Professional Ring Resizing
Need to have a ring adjusted in size? For assistance with resizing, book an in-store appointment or contact our Customer Care team for more details.
The potential for making a ring smaller or larger depends on its design and materials. Due to the complexity and craftsmanship of certain ring designs, not all pieces can be resized using traditional methods like cutting or adding metal. In these cases, our expert jewelers may recommend resizing with sizing beads or a sizing bar—a thoughtful alternative that preserves the integrity of the design and protects delicate or large gemstones.
Some styles—particularly select women's Cable designs—can only be resized using sizing beads. Many of our men's band rings also require beads or bars due to their structural composition. As a rule, titanium cannot be sized. If the inside of the ring is another metal (silver, gold, platinum), a titanium ring may be possible to size down with beads or a bar.
These elements are discreetly and securely soldered to the inside of the band. Should your finger size change in the future, sizing beads or bars can be professionally removed or adjusted without compromising the ring’s beauty or craftsmanship.
Ring Sizing Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if my measurement falls between two ring sizes?
When in doubt, choose the larger size for comfort and security—especially if you plan to wear the ring on your dominant hand, which is often slightly larger than the other. Most rings can be resized, but ensuring a comfortable fit from the start will save you time and effort.
How does finger swelling affect ring sizing?
Finger swelling can impact ring sizing as it causes your fingers to temporarily expand in size. Temperature changes, physical activity, diet, and even time of day can cause fluctuations in finger size. If your fingers tend to swell, opt for the larger size to ensure comfort. Our elegant open rings are great options for those desiring a more flexible fit.
